Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a form of depression that some people experience during the winter months when there is less natural sunlight. Like most people with SAD, symptoms start in the fall and may continue into the winter months, causing mood swings and zapping your energy.

Symptoms of SAD include;

  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
  • Changes in weight
  • Fatigue and decreased energy
  • Irritability and restlessness
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness
  • Sad, anxious or empty feelings
  • Socializing less
  • Depression

Treatment for seasonal affective disorder includes light therapy, psychotherapy and medications. For residents of Alaska, natural light isn’t aways available to us, which is why the use of SAD lights are essential. It is important to understand how to use light therapy such as the intensity, duration, and timing of its use as it can also adversely affect your internal sleep clock.
