A vacation sounds great for most people but if you’ve got sleep apnea you may be dreading the idea of having to wake up feeling exhausted and stressed during your time away.

Luckily, plenty of travelers who have sleep apnea have managed to enjoy their vacations and feel the benefits of their sleep apnea equipment. Below we’ll discuss why you should never think about leaving anything at home and list how and what you should always have in your luggage.

What to Bring

First and foremost, you MUST bring your CPAP machine with you, no ifs, ands or buts. There are plenty of carrying cases that come in all shapes and sizes.

If you can, try and get one that has a medical equipment label. Most importantly make sure that it has plenty of padding to protect your gear. Worthwhile accessories include:

  • Fresh or extra filters
  • An extra hose
  • An extra mask or different kinds of masks
  • Extension cord and outlet converter or adapter
  • Hose clips (to keep the hose elevated)
  • Cleaning spray or wipes

If you’ve chosen the right bag these should all fit. Something most people don’t consider bringing along is a humidifier. If you can make it fit, don’t leave it behind!

The last thing you should definitely bring with you is a medical alert card. These widely available pieces of identification will tell any doctors or nurses during an emergency that you have sleep apnea. Make sure to indicate your pressure numbers as well so that they know exactly how to keep your airways open.

Home Away From Home

Despite all the hesitation you may have about travelling with your equipment, the solutions are quite simple. There are plenty of products with your situation in mind. A vacation you can fully enjoy is something you can’t put a price on and so is your peace of mind.
