Fisher & Paykel CPAP mask review: Eson 2 Nasal Mask and Brevida

Just as there are lots of fish in the sea, so it is with CPAP masks, and here at the Alaska Sleep Clinic, we want to match you with the mask that will be the best fit for you.

In an earlier post, we reviewed a couple of ResMed masks: the AirFit N20 and F20 masks, but ResMed is not the only manufacturer out there. Let’s explore a few other mask options from our friends at Fisher and Paykel Healthcare.

The New Zealand-based company offers masks for mouth and nose breathers in four categories: full face, nasal, nasal pillows and oral. All in all, they offer 15 possible masks.

Only recently F&P began selling the Eson 2 Nasal Mask in the United States after receiving clearance from the FDA last fall. It also launched F&P Brevida, a nasal mask pillow in Austrailasia, Europe and Canada.

F&P Eson 2 Nasal Mask

This is the newest mask from F&P and is an updated version of the Eson Nasal Mask. The main features of the mask:

  • Updated cushion
  • Slimmer mask frame
  • Easy-to-fit headgear
  • Reusable filter

Updated RollFit cushion

The simple cushion design hasn’t changed much from the earlier model – in fact, the original Eson Nasal Mask is known for its RollFit seal. It allows the cushion to easily glide over the bridge of the nose as the user moves around during sleep. Even though it’s designed to keep a strong seal even when moving, the mask prevents leaks and nasal sores. The Eson 2 has a slimmer seal for a variety of facial structures, and many like the fact that it’s comfortable, yet easy to clean. However, if you have a broad nose, you will need to go with a different brand.

Slimmer mask frame

Even though the original design was already slim, the Eson 2 Nasal Mask boasts an open-view mask frame, which covers less surface. It has a full motion elbow, which moves in 360 degrees. The frame is also designed to fit all 3 sizes of cushions: small, medium and large.

Easy-to-fit headgear

The headgear on the Eson 2 is more durable and longer lasting, compared to the Eson, which was prone to deteriorate over time. The adjustable top strap is a plus as well as the improved clips, which are easier to use. The forehead support and mask frame attach to four headgear points around the face, while the slim, grey strap found at the crown of the head adjusts to prevent the headgear from sliding in different directions.

The headgear will maintain the adjusted position even when removing the mask. Two headgear clips found on either side of the base of the frame unhook from the small rods for an easy release.

Reusable diffuser

A small, grey diffuser is found on the top of the mask elbow. The diffuser doesn’t only reduce noise as air releases from the mask, but is now eco-friendly and reusable compared to the earlier model’s disposable one, lengthening the life of the Eson 2 Nasal Mask.

F&P Brevida

Not only does the company work to make it for all types, but F&P’s designs are award winning.

In February, Fisher-Paykel Healthcare’s F&P Brevida mask won the prestigious Product Design award from independent German design organization, iF International Forum Design GmbH.

After extensive patient-centered research, F&P developed the easy to wear nasal pillow. It features two different size inflatable nasal pillows with side supports to reduce dislodging during sleep. The AirPillow has a built in plastic clip to lock into place and can easily be removed for cleaning.

The headgear is soft, flexible and made like swimming goggles: split in the back. It also has strong Velcro tabs at the front of the mask. The short slim tubing, which extends from the mask frame has a swivel at the bottem and will connect to any CPAP/BiPAP machine.

F&P Brevida is a nasal pillows mask that is light weight with adjustable headgear. The AirPillow cushion is different in that it inflates to form a pillow of air in and around the nose creating a seal.

Features

  • Washable diffuser filter that reduces noise and air draft
  • Adjustable headgear that is soft, flexible and minimalist on the face
  • Air Pillow Seal with a cushion that inflates when air enters, sealing in and around the bottom of the nose
  • VisiBlue technology that incorporates a light blue color to help with disassembly and reassembly
  • Both pillow sizes included (XS/S and M/L)

This mask is not the first one to win a design award. The Pilairo mask and Optiflow Junior nasal cannula both won in 2012. The F&P Simplus full face mask won the Purple Pin prize awards at the 2014 Best Design Awards and the HME Business 2014 New Product Award.
