A Polysomnography (PSG) is a sleep study which involves an overnight recording of many important body functions and measurements. Polysomnography is used to diagnose many different types of sleep disorders including narcolepsy, REM behavior disorder, and sleep apnea.
- During sleep testing the following body functions are monitored;
- Brain electrical activity
- Eye and jaw muscle movement
- Leg muscle movement
- Airflow
- Respiratory effort
- EKG
- Oxygen saturation
During the study, electrodes are placed on the scalp and face and will send electrical signals to the measuring instruments. These signals, which are generated by brain and muscle activity, are then recorded digitally. Audio and video recordings also help monitor a night’s sleep for evaluation and diagnosis.
